“I don’t have to look like anyone’s idea of beauty anymore. I like what I see in the mirror. Even if I do have blinders on about some of myself.”
‘Life is not over when you turn 50. Sex is better. It’s OK to eat dessert first.’ These are pieces of advice from Michelle, as she moves into the next decade of her life. She feels very solid with who she is, what she thinks, how she feels – and does not hold the weight of what others opinions of her may be. With this mantra in life over 50, Michelle would advise her 20-something self to take more risks and open her eyes – that being okay with yourself is a much greater value than what ‘he’ thinks of you. She unapologetically loves the person who is looking back at her in the mirror. Besides being kind, funny, generous and a self-described b*tch, when needed, she refers to herself as being a Swiss Army knife, especially at her company, knowing all of the ins and outs of the system, through over 20 years of experience. Michelle is also an expert when it comes to cooking and baking.
Michelle is hopeful that change is coming with her generation, Gen X, coming into power and diversifying the white-male-boomer-generation-dominant government. When Michelle looks back at the 80’s, (with fond teenage memories of her and her best friend of over 30 years) she describes it as a ‘cringe-worthy’ decade.
“Here I am if you like me; you can leave if you don’t.
Before 50 I was more concerned with how the world saw me. Now, I feel like If they don’t like what they look at, they can look away!”
