casting call: THREE YEARS OLD

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

I’m so excited about our July & August 2011 casting call. I’m looking for Portland THREE YEAR OLDS to photograph in the studio — it’s an age I don’t quite ‘get’ and I’m trying to experiment to see how a three year old responds to the camera and the unnatural situation of going to a studio location.

I don’t care what the kid wears; in fact if s/he dresses herself, ALL THE BETTER! I will be attempting to elicit extremely natural photos, which means no one will be asking your child to smile or pose. If s/he is feeling uncooperative or grouchy, THAT’S OK! We’ll just see what happens.

Photo shoots happen on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at my studio in SE Portland. Session fee is waived, and your child will probably be featured in some kind of publication (at least blogged). If you want to support us, any files are available to purchase after the session for $20 but of course no purchase is required or expected. It’s all in good fun!

Here’s my first subject, Jude. He’s currently obsessed with ceiling fans and switches, and claims mommy is one year old.

Q: Did you like being photographed by Rachel? What was your favorite part?
Aryanna: Yes. Just hanging out with her was my favorite part. She is pretty cool.
Kaety: Yes. My favorite part would have to be the lightning round [at the end].

Q: What did you think about coming to the photo studio?
Aryanna: I thought it would be fun. When I got there I liked the space. It made it easy to do what I was doing.
Kaety: I liked it. I liked just getting to be there.

Q: What do you think about being in pictures? Was it hard work? or 100% fun?
Aryanna: I liked it. She got me used to it. It was 100% fun.
Kaety: 100% fun. I liked getting to do all these cool poses and stuff.

Q: Any other advice for kids out there?
Aryanna: You don’t have to be a super star to [be photographed at the studio].
Kaety: I would recommend it to them because it is really fun.

Idiot or Genius?

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

IdiotorGenius Portland OR

I did a little studio shoot for local Portland company Idiot or Genius. We got some funny, quirky little photos for them with my friends Oscar and Cadence and Aryanna and Kaety. I hope IoG sells more from their kids line (but they also do some very “adult” work with show posters and other screenprint designs as well).

Right now their eponymous t-shirt is a top seller.

They also have some very Portland, and some subtly political stuff as well:

You should check out their stuff! I’m trying to get them to list these t-shirts up on their etsy page asap to accommodate the rush of orders after you all fall in love with their quirky, brilliant work.

casting call | little redhead girl in white dress

Monday, June 28th, 2010

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for redheads, so when Boston-area artist Julia Denos made my sweet little girl illustration exactly to my specifications, I was thrilled.

I’m putting out a general casting call for another poster girl with curly red hair like this, between the ages of 4 and 9 years old in the San Francisco Bay area. Ideally she would also have access to a little white dress for the photo shoot. Portraits from the session would be used for marketing materials for my business, and my model would get a framed fine art print of her choice from the portrait session.

If you know someone with a daughter who fits the bill, please have them get in contact with me. I can’t wait to find my next poster child! 🙂

AWAY MESSAGE and casting call

holga camera Boston MA

The past month we have been traveling nonstop – every weekend a new location and a new event! I’ve done weddings in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, and California recently. This weekend we’re headed out to Chicago to be guests at a wedding and then we’re off to eastern Europe!

I’ll be back in the office on Monday and Tuesday (July 27 and 28) doing minimal administrative work and finishing the proofing of recent portrait sessions while packing for Europe, then from Wednesday, July 29 through Friday, August 7 I will be offline and having adventures abroad in Bulgaria. Any print orders placed during this time will have an inadvertent extra 7 day delay in fulfillment.

Now for the really fun part…. a contest! I really enjoyed the “love shoot” promo from February over on the wedding site,  so I wanted to open up another contest for a new england couple.

Kayla in the studio

Every child is different and unique, but just like adults at a wedding, children in an unnatural environment often follow a pattern. 🙂

When kids come into a studio, they start out excitedly giving you the cheese smile and cutesy poses. Next, they relax and bop around and act all natural. The last stage when you know you have to take a break or wrap it up is when they get bored with you and ready to be done. Finally, when it’s all over, they don’t want to leave the studio, and ask if they can come back the next day!

Kayla was fun to have as our first studio child model. (Yep, that’s a wig.) We have a bunch of kooky, charming images from the hour or so that we spent together. Tammy and I enjoyed watching her bop around and I have to say that it was the first time I have had Britney Spears and Hannah Montana stations added to my Pandora queue!
